How is GUI structured?
GUI consists of various units, including Education, Craft, and Farming!
Charting the direction of this beautiful vision - to spread Love, Laughter, and to live an Inspiring Life.
Our beloved Kampung Chief is a resilient man who gave up a well-paying job to fulfil his vision of a 21st Century kampung culture. Lai Hock believes in practicing mindfulness and meditates regularly.
“All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.”
– Blaise Pascal
Mei is our Kampung Wonder Woman – from changkul-ing to washing to weeding, she does it all with amazing grace! She takes charge of caring for the space and does it with incredible efficiency.
Huiying is our volunteer coordinator who radiates warmth to everyone she meets. Her friendly and welcoming demeanor makes all new visitors to the Kampung feel at home. In her free time, Huiying unleashes her inner auntie and enjoys making pottery and doing taichi.
Bingyu is our hardworking Kampung Architect who leads the Builders Team in the building of our Kampung Kampus. A man who is always ready to help others around him, he humbly claims to be “a very boring person” who loves football, and frequents libraries and hawker centres with his wife.
“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. ” – Alvin Toffler
Khin Boon leads the craft team, managing sales, manpower and workshop execution in GUI. In his free time, he enjoys reading and engaging in Buddhism studies. A patient man who is always seen with a kind smile on his face, do not hesitate to say hello!
Xu Hong is one of our best men on the ground - while helming the education unit for the past five years, he has also been involved in Operations and Business Development. His dream is to join the Navy SEALS; in the meantime, however, he has a huge mission to accomplish at the Kampung Kampus in Singapore!
David is our silent comrade behind the scenes - our advisor for strategic planning towards GUI's future. He met GUI through his daughter's broken tooth at one of our camps. He's so mysterious that you cannot even see his photo now!
A WOW! Future built by Our Head, Heart, Hands and Feet
Edwina, also known as Eddie or Po, was part of our second GUTS (Ground-Up Troopers) team and has been working with our education unit in curriculum development. She used to teach English and Literature, and likes reading science fiction. She makes the team laugh a lot!
BELA THE BEE
Bela is an engineer-turned-educator as she found her way into the Kampung through volunteering three years ago. She loves reading the old school way and enjoys a quiet stretch anytime! Her smile also has the ability to brighten up anyone's day.
Nabilah takes care of our wonderful pre-school programmes that teach children to love and care for our Just One Earth. She loves handicraft and calligraphy, and is always giving the people at the Kampung a lovely dose of unique laughter!
Hoi Wen is our lovely warrior at the Kampung who is always up for a good laugh. She enjoys connecting and journeying with people into authentic well-being and holds the secrets to it! Chat with her to uncover more. She has international experience in sustainability and is convinced more and more of Ubuntu – “I am what I am because of who we all are”. When she is not saving the world from itself, she goes exploring in nature, bird-watching, choral singing, swimming and loves nurturing edible bacteria, worms and people!
“He who works with his hands is a labourer.
He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman.
He who works with his hands, his head and his heart is an artist.”
- Francis of Assisi
Wood craft maker and instructor
Johanna is one of our wood crafters. She wants to devote her life to the pursuit of craftsmanship and traditional handwork and she dreams of making things that are useful, beautiful and friendly to the earth. Outside of work, she also enjoys hiking, brewing tea and sewing clothes by hand.
Bob assists our craft unit Touchwood with many of their existing workshops, both internal and external; as well as external projects. During his free time, he pursues a hobby of photographing birds.
Ben is a self-taught carpenter and is always the happy pill at our Making Space. He is a man of few words, but once you know him, it will be an endless banter! In his free time he enjoys ice cold beer with the rest of his Touchwood buddies.
Zhensheng is our part-time craftsman who often has a mega-watt smile showing through his beard when you see him engaging children. Off-work, he enjoys reading a little, cycling some, and wandering a lot.
Alison organises events and manages volunteers to ensure that the programmes/events in Touchwood run smoothly. Upon leaving work, she catches up with her furkid, work on long overdue crafts (+coffee), read books (+coffee) and time with herself.
"One of the first conditions of happiness is that the link between Man and Nature shall not be broken." - Leo Tolstoy
Eleanor is our Miss Little Sunshine who is always going around with a cheery 'good morning' on her face! She takes care of our Kampung Retreats and loves a dose of good music and time with her furry doggie, Scotty in her free time.
One of our lovely elders on the farm who is always smiling and enjoying dishing out food for our cat, Kopi!
Mun Kit is our full-time farmer with a bucket of experience from his university days in Sustainable Agriculture. He enjoys meeting people from all walks of life!
Where our unsung warriors work silently behind the scenes!
Of course, it’s not just the teams above making the Kampung Kampus thrive. We also have our bunch of active volunteers working silently behind the scenes – touching wood; on the soil; warming hearts!
