Bake using one-of-a-kind earth oven in Singapore. Join us in this baking experience at Ground-Up Initiative, and bring home gourmet pizzas baked in an ancient, time-honoured way. Suitable for all ages.

Venue: Kampung Kampus, 91 Lorong Chencharu, Singapore 769201 (10 min walk from Khatib MRT)

Note: A minimum of 8 pax is required to start the workshop. Maximum 10 adult participants. We will update within a week of the workshop date. Should the workshop be unable to proceed, we will contact you for the next available date, or transfer your credit to another workshop. Please help to spread the word!

An adult can bring one child (between 8 & 12 years old) at no additional fee.Please indicate age in comments if you are bringing along your child!

Description

If you are looking for a unique farm-to-table experience in the rustic wilder side of urban Singapore, you’ve come to the right place!

We will welcome you to our organic farm, giving you an overview of our values and practices at Ground-Up Initiative, as well as the opportunity to harvest your very own pizza-making ingredients from our garden.

You are welcome to be creative with your pizza toppings. . On top of basic components like cheese and tomato sauce, we offer a wide array of plant-based toppings sourced from our garden and beyond! Some delicious possibilities are blue pea flowers (to colour your dough), mulberry (for a sweet touch on the pizza), papaya (which can shredded and mixed with the cheese), basil (for spice), and kale!

Then we will kick off our wood-fired, plant-based pizza-making experience. You will be taught the process of making pizza dough by hand, including the basic techniques of kneading and proofing dough.

As a finishing touch, you get to bake your pizza in our wood-fired earth oven. Each participant gets to pack home two gourmet pizzas. Please bring containers that are big enough to contain two 7-inch pizzas.

    Wow, what a fantastic day out of bonding for my father and myself! As a vegan, it is very challenging to find food workshops that will accomodate me but GUI was fantastic from Khin Boon and all the staff who handled all my queries and addressed my needs.
    Derrick was a fantastic chef who helped us make the scrumptious sauce and the best part was he provided a wonderful array, indeed a cornucopia of herbs for us participants to place into our creations. This resulted in “the best pizza I have ever eaten in my life” declared my also vegan hubby. I agree too because his home grown herbs made for the most fragrant of pizzas which I found worked so well with boiled potatoes, vegan daiya cheese (which i was allowed to bring as my substitute). Derrick also brought a wide yummy variety of ingredients for us to experiment with and this was such a lovely welcome surprise. I know many workshops who would just give you a few ingredients at best. Here we had about 10 to 15 including the herbs: ranging from 2 types of mushrooms, fresh grown pineapple, boiled potatoes, 2 types of Derrick’s home made sauerkraut etc. These personal touches from Derrick was wonderful in a workshop that stressed everything from the ground up. And wow, working with Singapore’s only hand built over and hearing its history all the way to using it was a dream come true from me. I’m the kind of gal who wants to make everything she could if she had the skills and knowledge! A home chef myself, it was lovely watching folks so passionate about cooking, cultivation and creation. And the proof was in the eating. Fabulous shout out to Kim, the pastry chef who delivered a most yummy pizza dough that cooked so well in the earth oven as well as the home oven. Without any additives, her dough was tasty without being too heavy and learning the techniques of time proofing was so eye-opening. My dad and I too rarely have time to bond due to work and life demands so what a rare and enriching opportunity we had in this workshop. Much fun, laughter and teamwork ensued this day. One where we both had tasty creations to share and enjoy. Oh and to do this outdoors in a rural setting, this was fantastic. And a final shoutout to the gentleness and compassion to all the staff there. We had one autistic participant and everyone treated him with kindness and dignity. For a wonderful family day out of just for yourself, folks look no further! Come and do this since we have so few experiences like this one in Singapore 😀 Thank you Derrick, Kim, Khin Boon and all at GUI for a memory of a lifetime for this gal and her dad.

    greatly enjoyed the process of making my own pizza, well worth the money spent got to make 3 yummy pizzas and tour around GUI learning the different herbs and plants grown there. highly recommend!!
